Community, Leadership & Reflecting on a Day at Buckingham Palace

There are certain moments in life that genuinely make you stop and reflect.

Recently, I had the incredible honour of attending a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace after being invited by the Herefordshire Lieutenancy and Mr Edward Harley CBE in recognition of my continued work supporting the local community and the county of Herefordshire.

Standing within such an iconic setting was both surreal and deeply humbling. But more importantly, it provided a rare opportunity to pause and reflect on the journey so far and the people, organisations and communities who have been part of it along the way.

While my name may have appeared on the invitation, this recognition represents something far bigger than one individual.

It reflects the power of community, collaboration and collective effort.

Building Community Through Action

One of the projects closest to my heart has been the continued growth of Belmont Wanderers Football Club.

What began as a small grassroots football club has evolved into one of the county’s largest volunteer-led organisations, now supporting more than 500 players across 30+ teams with the support of over 70 incredible volunteers.

Together, we are currently delivering a transformational £2.7 million community project that will create modern sporting and community facilities designed to support future generations for years to come.

That journey has reinforced something I strongly believe:

👉 real impact is created from the ground up.

It happens through people giving their time, energy and passion to create opportunities for others.

The Role of The DM Lab

Alongside community work, The DM Lab has provided another platform to support positive change across Herefordshire and beyond.

Through strategic thinking, digital platforms and creative problem-solving, we’ve had the privilege of supporting businesses, charities, membership organisations and public sector teams to communicate more effectively, modernise their operations and strengthen their long-term growth.

At its core, The DM Lab has never simply been about marketing.

It has always been about helping good organisations achieve meaningful outcomes.

Whether supporting projects such as:

• community-focused organisations
• charities and public sector initiatives
• local independent businesses
• growing B2B companies

our focus remains the same:

👉 creating digital platforms and strategies that support real people and real impact.

This philosophy shapes everything from our WordPress development projects through to wider digital platform strategy and solutions architecture work.

A Moment to Reflect

The day at Buckingham Palace was filled with several “pinch me” moments, but perhaps the biggest takeaway was the reminder that recognition is never achieved alone.

It belongs to:

• every volunteer giving up evenings and weekends
• every coach helping young people develop confidence and life skills
• every organisation striving to improve lives locally
• every person contributing positively to their community

I have never undertaken any of this work for praise or recognition.

I do it because I genuinely care about the people and communities around me.

But moments like this do allow you to stop briefly and appreciate the impact collective effort can have.

Why Community & Business Should Not Be Separate

One thing I have learned over the years is that business and community are not separate ideas.

Strong organisations create impact beyond commercial success alone.

Whether through grassroots sport, charitable initiatives or supporting local businesses, long-term success is often built on relationships, trust and contribution.

That same thinking influences how we approach projects at The DM Lab.

We believe websites, systems and digital strategy should do more than simply generate clicks.

They should support:

• communication
• growth
• operational improvement
• long-term sustainability

for the organisations and communities they serve.

Looking Ahead

I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to attend such a special occasion, proud to represent Herefordshire, and incredibly thankful to everyone who has been part of the journey so far.

Most importantly, it reinforced something that has always mattered to me:
