The Challenge

There is an old saying about the shoemaker’s children having no shoes.

After years of helping clients modernise their websites, improve performance and move away from restrictive platforms, it was time to apply the same thinking to our own digital presence.

The DM Lab website had grown considerably over more than 15 years.

Built using WordPress and Elementor, it contained approximately:

  • 500 blog posts
  • more than 280 portfolio items
  • over 55 case studies
  • a growing number of service and industry pages

The platform still worked, but it had become increasingly heavy and difficult to maintain at scale.

The challenge was not simply to redesign the website.

We needed to create a faster, more resilient and future-ready platform without putting years of SEO visibility, content or established URLs at risk.

Our Objectives

The new platform needed to deliver four clear outcomes.

Improved Performance
Create a significantly faster front end with cleaner code, stronger Core Web Vitals and a better mobile experience.

Simple Content Management
Retain a familiar editing experience so non-technical team members could continue publishing content and updating pages.

SEO & AEO Protection
Preserve existing rankings and URLs while creating a stronger technical foundation for traditional search and AI-powered discovery.

Future-Ready Hosting
Reduce front-end maintenance and create a reliable deployment process capable of supporting long-term growth.

Our Approach

We approached the project as a complete solutions architecture and platform modernisation exercise.

Rather than replacing WordPress entirely, we separated content management from front-end delivery.

WordPress remains the editing environment, while the public website is delivered through a fast, static Astro front end.

This allowed us to retain the flexibility and familiarity of WordPress while removing much of the front-end weight associated with a traditional Elementor build.

Services Delivered

This project required a combination of technical architecture, development, SEO migration and performance optimisation.

Solutions Architecture
Designing a headless platform that separates content management from website delivery while maintaining a simple editorial workflow.

Headless WordPress Development
Retaining WordPress as the content management system and using WPGraphQL and Advanced Custom Fields to deliver structured content to the new front end.

Astro Front-End Development
Building a lightweight static website designed for speed, resilience and long-term maintainability.

SEO Migration
Mapping historic URLs, preserving page structures and implementing a comprehensive 301 redirect strategy to protect existing search visibility.

Performance Optimisation
Improving page speed, accessibility, Core Web Vitals and front-end stability across devices.

Moving to a Headless Architecture

The previous website combined content management, page building and front-end delivery within one WordPress installation.

As the site grew, this created greater complexity and increasing performance overhead.

The new architecture separates these responsibilities.

WordPress now acts purely as the content source, while Astro generates the public-facing website as optimised static files.

This provides several advantages:

  • faster page delivery
  • reduced front-end code
  • improved security
  • lower maintenance requirements
  • greater resilience
  • better scalability

Most importantly, the team can continue using a familiar WordPress editing environment without sacrificing front-end performance.

This reflects our wider approach to building connected digital platforms that balance usability with technical performance.

Migrating a Large Existing Content Estate

The scale of the existing website made migration one of the most important parts of the project.

Hundreds of blogs, portfolio items, case studies and service pages needed to move into the new structure without damaging existing search visibility.

A detailed redirect map was created to ensure historic URLs continued to resolve correctly.

This included:

  • preserving important page paths
  • identifying duplicate and legacy URLs
  • implementing permanent 301 redirects
  • protecting inbound links
  • maintaining established search signals

The migration was treated as an SEO project as much as a development project.

Our guide to website migration without losing SEO or performance explains why this planning is critical when rebuilding an established website.

Preserving a Familiar Editing Experience

Performance improvements should not make a website harder to manage.

The new platform retains WordPress as the editorial system, allowing the team to continue creating and updating:

  • blog posts
  • case studies
  • service pages
  • industry content
  • portfolio items

Structured content is delivered through WPGraphQL and Advanced Custom Fields, giving the front end clean, consistent data without requiring editors to work directly with code.

This combines the flexibility of WordPress development with the speed of a modern static website.

Design & Brand Discipline

The rebuild was not only technical.

It also provided an opportunity to refine how The DM Lab presents itself visually.

The website retains the agency’s monochrome identity while introducing a cleaner, Metro-inspired design system built around:

  • strong typography
  • clear hierarchy
  • structured spacing
  • modular layouts
  • consistent components

Fonts are self-hosted to improve privacy, control and performance.

The result is a platform that feels recognisably The DM Lab while being significantly more disciplined and consistent across hundreds of pages.

Automated Deployment

The new platform uses a continuous integration and deployment process.

When content or code changes are approved, the website can be rebuilt and deployed automatically.

This provides:

  • consistent releases
  • reduced manual deployment
  • faster updates
  • easier rollback
  • greater confidence when publishing changes

The result is a platform that is easier to maintain without sacrificing control.

Performance Results

The new website delivered measurable improvements across performance, accessibility and search readiness.

Lighthouse Results

  • SEO: 100
  • Accessibility: 96
  • First Contentful Paint: under 2 seconds
  • Largest Contentful Paint: under 2 seconds
  • Cumulative Layout Shift: 0

These are not simply technical scores.

They translate into real user and commercial benefits.

Faster loading
Visitors reach content more quickly, particularly on mobile connections.

Zero layout shift
Pages remain stable while loading, reducing frustration and accidental interaction.

Improved accessibility
A wider range of users can navigate and understand the website effectively.

Stronger Core Web Vitals
A healthier technical foundation supports search visibility and reduces bounce.

The new site demonstrates how technical SEO and platform architecture can work together to improve both user experience and organic performance.

SEO & AI Search Foundations

The rebuild also created an opportunity to strengthen the website for both traditional search engines and emerging AI search platforms.

The platform supports:

  • structured metadata
  • clean semantic HTML
  • Schema.org implementation
  • fast crawlable pages
  • clear internal linking
  • content freshness signals
  • AI-readable content structures

This gives The DM Lab a stronger foundation for search visibility while supporting how platforms such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and other answer engines interpret content.

Continuous Improvement

A digital platform is never truly finished.

While the new site represents a significant improvement, further optimisation remains part of the roadmap.

Planned improvements include:

  • broader image optimisation
  • continued HTTP protocol improvements
  • progressive HSTS strengthening
  • ongoing Core Web Vitals monitoring
  • refinement of structured data
  • continued internal linking improvements

This reflects how we work with clients: launch is an important milestone, but long-term performance comes from continuous review and improvement.

Impact

The rebuild has transformed The DM Lab website from a large, traditional WordPress build into a modern digital platform.

The project delivered:

  • significantly faster page performance
  • improved Core Web Vitals
  • stronger accessibility
  • preserved URLs and search equity
  • a simpler publishing workflow
  • automated deployment
  • reduced front-end maintenance
  • a scalable foundation for continued content growth

The website now reflects the type of platform work we deliver for clients: structured, resilient, measurable and designed for long-term growth.

What This Demonstrates

This project showcases The DM Lab’s ability to combine:

  • Solutions Architecture
  • Headless WordPress
  • Astro Development
  • SEO Migration
  • User Experience Design
  • Performance Optimisation
  • CI/CD Deployment
  • Technical SEO

to modernise a large, established digital estate without sacrificing usability or search visibility.

Founder’s Perspective

“After years of helping clients modernise their digital platforms, it was important that our own website reflected the same standards we recommend to others. The challenge was not simply making it faster. It was protecting more than 15 years of content and SEO value while creating a platform our team could still manage easily. The result is a site that better represents where The DM Lab is today and where we are going next.”

— Chris Tipping, Managing Director, The DM Lab

Final Thought

The DM Lab website rebuild demonstrates that organisations do not always need to abandon the systems their teams already understand.

By combining WordPress with a modern headless front end, we retained a familiar editorial experience while delivering significantly better speed, stability and technical performance.

The result is more than a redesigned website.

It is a scalable digital platform built to support the next stage of The DM Lab’s growth.

If your existing website has become slow, difficult to maintain or restrictive, we can help you explore a more effective architecture.
