Saturday 16th February – Hereford RFC v Longton RFC

Extending our reach in supporting more local teams – Hereford RFC!

This weekend, we had the opportunity to get involved with another local club we are yet to be involved with. Thanks to Jo at Hereford RFC, we sponsored the Man of the Match and the Match Ball.

It was just a small offering, but it was good to get involved before the end of the 2018 / 2019 season. As you all know by now, we have a keen interest in supporting whatever we can, wherever we can. It was a taster of what a matchday entails at Wyeside, having experienced fantastic hospitality and atmosphere at Luctonians, Ledbury RFC and Greyhound RFC.

It was great to meet a few of the Hereford RFC committee, including Jo who gave us the opportunity for sponsorship, Ivan and Spencer among others. Following the welcomes came the rugby. A decent morning had turned into a half decent afternoon. Within minutes Richard Jones (who would turn out to be our chosen Man of the Match) surged forward on the right opening the scoring.

A great start, however…

Longton hit back but Hereford RFC continued to rack up the points, scoring 5 converted tries to Longton’s 1. Richard Jones also scored the fourth and bonus point winning trying try but besides the scoring, had an excellent game. The pack did well as a whole. The referee giving decisions both ways. Longton’s number 8, Pete Wilshaw had a good game. Some strong carries and some big hits.

The backs had a few opportunities to stretch their legs too. Scoring from open play a couple of times and Hereford’s fullback Sean Day dotting down underneath the posts in the first half following some good build up play.

The match finished 35-5. It was a great game to be involved. Such an emphatic win and picking up the full 5 points as reward for a good shift all round. Thanks to all for the hospitality. Unfortunately we are both currently training for a couple of summer ultramarathons which includes a strict diet. The only reason why we couldn’t indulge or have a few celebratory drinks! It was still a good afternoon. Seeing the club win and offering our support too.

Well done to the team as a whole and congratulations to Richard Jones, blindside flanker, who we awarded our Man of the Match.
