Client: James Robinson Motorcycle Training
Location: Rotherwas, Hereford
Sector: Motorcycle Training / Driver Education
Website: https://drivinglessonshereford.co.uk/

The Challenge

James Robinson Motorcycle Training is a DVSA-approved motorcycle training school based in Rotherwas, Hereford.

The business offers a range of motorcycle training courses, including Compulsory Basic Training (CBT), A1, A2, Direct Access and refresher training, with one-to-one tuition and online booking through RideTo.

However, its existing website no longer reflected the business or the needs of prospective riders.

Built using a WordPress theme dating back to 2014, the website had become difficult to maintain and increasingly disconnected from the services the training school actually offered.

Even relatively straightforward changes required workarounds. Adding a prominent "Book Online" button was difficult because the original theme had no child theme and offered limited flexibility.

The website also had several more significant problems.

Performance
The homepage loaded 47 scripts and 24 stylesheets, while our testing recorded approximately four seconds before the server began responding.

Navigation
The main navigation contained only one link - Home - making it difficult for visitors to explore the available training options.

Content
There were no dedicated course pages or published prices, meaning prospective riders could not easily compare their options before making an enquiry.

Accuracy
Some training information referred to outdated DVSA requirements, while pages advertising car lessons and Pass Plus remained published despite the business now focusing on motorcycle training.

Security
The server exposed PHP and Plesk version information and did not implement a Content-Security-Policy.

The challenge was therefore much bigger than a visual redesign.

The website needed to become faster, clearer, more accurate, more secure and easier for both prospective riders and search engines to understand.

Our Approach

We approached the project as a complete technical and content rebuild.

Rather than attempting to extend an ageing WordPress theme with additional plugins and workarounds, we reviewed what the business actually needed from its website.

The requirements were relatively straightforward:

  • Explain the available motorcycle training courses
  • Help visitors understand licence requirements
  • Make prices easy to find
  • Provide a clear route to online booking
  • Improve local search visibility
  • Support AI-assisted search discovery
  • Deliver an excellent mobile experience
  • Minimise maintenance and ongoing hosting costs

The website did not need a complex content-management system or extensive client-side functionality.

It needed to deliver accurate information quickly and reliably.

We therefore built a lightweight static website, with performance, security, accessibility and search visibility considered from the beginning.

This is a good example of our solutions architecture approach, where we choose technology around the requirements of the business rather than introducing complexity that the project does not need.

From a Single Navigation Link to a Proper Course Structure

One of the most important improvements was rebuilding the website around the services people actually search for.

The previous website did not provide individual pages for the main motorcycle training courses.

This limited the information available to prospective riders and gave search engines very little dedicated content to associate with specific training searches.

We created a clearer structure with dedicated information for:

  • Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)
  • Introduction to Motorcycling
  • A1 and A2 motorcycle licence training
  • Direct Access Scheme (DAS)
  • Refresher training
  • Motorcycle licence requirements
  • Areas served

Each course page explains the relevant training option and provides a clearer route towards booking.

The new website also makes pricing visible.

Examples include:

  • CBT - £180
  • Introduction to Motorcycling - £90
  • Direct Access - £819.50
  • Refresher training - from £120

Publishing this information helps riders understand their options before making contact and reduces unnecessary uncertainty during the booking journey.

Accurate Information for Prospective Riders

Motorcycle licensing can be confusing, particularly for people trying to understand the differences between CBT, A1, A2 and Direct Access training.

The previous website contained outdated references to motorcycle test requirements.

As part of the rebuild, we reviewed the relevant information against GOV.UK guidance and developed a clearer motorcycle licence guide.

We also removed outdated content relating to car lessons and Pass Plus, which no longer reflected the business's current offering.

This matters for more than SEO.

When someone is making decisions about training, licensing and safety, the information needs to be accurate, relevant and easy to understand.

The new website is structured to help prospective riders find the right information without navigating irrelevant or outdated pages.

Search Visibility Built into the Architecture

The website was rebuilt with technical SEO as a core requirement.

Instead of relying on a general homepage to target every service, the new structure gives individual training courses their own dedicated pages.

This allows each page to address a more specific search intent.

For example, someone searching for CBT training in Hereford has different questions from someone researching a full motorcycle licence through Direct Access.

The new architecture supports those differences.

Technical SEO work included:

  • Dedicated course landing pages
  • Descriptive page titles and meta descriptions
  • Structured internal linking
  • XML sitemap
  • Local business information
  • Course structured data
  • Breadcrumb structured data
  • Relevant FAQs
  • Redirects from legacy WordPress URLs

The result is a much clearer technical foundation for SEO and local search visibility.

Making the Website Easier for AI-Assisted Search to Understand

Search behaviour is changing.

Prospective riders may still search Google for "CBT Hereford", but they may also ask conversational questions such as:

"How much does CBT cost in Hereford?"

"What motorcycle licence do I need?"

"Can I go straight to a full motorcycle licence?"

We structured the new content to answer these questions directly.

Course pages open with concise Quick Answer sections that summarise the most important information before providing additional detail.

We also implemented structured data covering the business, courses, pricing, FAQs and page hierarchy.

An llms.txt file provides an additional summary for compatible AI tools, while the site's crawler configuration permits access by supported AI crawlers.

These measures make the content easier for compatible systems to discover and interpret.

They do not guarantee inclusion in AI-generated answers, but they create a clearer foundation for Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) and emerging AI-assisted search experiences.

A Mobile Experience That Feels Like an App

Many prospective riders will first visit the website on their phone.

We therefore designed the mobile experience around fast access to the information and actions that matter most.

A bottom navigation bar gives the website an app-like feel, with a prominent raised Book button.

The interface also includes:

  • Clear mobile navigation
  • Responsive course layouts
  • Touch-friendly controls
  • Visual feedback when buttons are pressed
  • Navigation that works without JavaScript
  • The option to add the website to a phone's home screen

The objective was not to make the website unnecessarily complicated.

It was to make booking and finding information feel immediate.

This reflects our wider approach to user experience design, where the interface is built around what the visitor needs to accomplish.

Performance by Removing Complexity

The original website was carrying substantial front-end weight.

Our initial inspection identified:

  • 47 script tags
  • 24 stylesheets
  • Approximately four seconds before the server began responding

Rather than attempting to compensate for that complexity with additional optimisation plugins, we removed the unnecessary dependencies altogether.

The rebuilt website uses no client-side JavaScript of its own.

The result is a much smaller, simpler experience with fewer resources for the browser to download and process.

The new homepage transfers approximately 258 KB across just 12 requests.

This approach delivered excellent measured performance without relying on a complicated caching or optimisation stack.

Security by Design

Security was another major reason for moving away from the previous architecture.

The old website exposed server software version information and lacked a Content-Security-Policy.

The replacement site was designed to reduce unnecessary exposure.

Security measures include:

Strict Content-Security-Policy
A restrictive policy controls which resources the browser is permitted to load, with automated checks included in the build process.

HTTPS Enforcement
Secure connections are enforced through the hosting configuration.

Reduced Attack Surface
The website has no WordPress plugins, public login system, custom forms, tracking scripts or cookies of its own.

Non-Privileged Container
The application runs in a container without administrative privileges.

Legacy WordPress Endpoint Removal
Old WordPress login and administration URLs return HTTP 410 Gone responses.

These decisions remove entire categories of maintenance and exposure associated with the previous setup.

Security is never a one-time guarantee, but the new architecture is substantially simpler to maintain and defend.

A Controlled Website Migration

Replacing the technology was only part of the project.

It was also important to preserve continuity for visitors and search engines.

We mapped existing WordPress URLs to the most relevant new destinations and implemented redirects where appropriate.

This allows visitors following older links to reach useful content rather than encountering broken pages.

DNS was migrated to DigitalOcean, with the new site deployed in its London region.

The hosting setup also provides a straightforward release process.

Changes are committed through GitHub, checked automatically and deployed through the configured pipeline.

If a build fails its checks, it does not progress to deployment.

This is the kind of controlled approach we recommend for website migration without losing SEO or performance.

Results & Impact

The rebuild delivered substantial measurable improvements in technical performance, security and usability.

What the Results Mean for the Business

The technical improvements are significant, but the wider value is in what the website can now do.

For prospective riders
Training courses, prices and booking information are easier to find and understand.

For mobile visitors
The website loads quickly and provides an app-like navigation experience.

For search engines
Dedicated service pages and structured information provide a clearer understanding of the business and its training options.

For the business owner
The platform has fewer moving parts, lower hosting costs and a controlled deployment process.

For security
The replacement architecture removes unnecessary functionality and reduces the number of components that need to be maintained.

The new website provides a much stronger foundation for generating relevant motorcycle training enquiries.

Longer-term improvements in organic rankings, AI search visibility and booking conversions can be measured as data becomes available.

What This Demonstrates

The James Robinson Motorcycle Training project demonstrates The DM Lab's ability to combine:

  • Website Strategy
  • Static Website Development
  • Technical SEO
  • Local SEO
  • Answer Engine Optimisation
  • Mobile-First UX
  • Security Engineering
  • Website Migration
  • Performance Optimisation
  • Cloud Hosting & Deployment

to deliver a website that is faster, clearer and easier to maintain.

It also demonstrates that achieving excellent performance does not always require adding more technology.

Sometimes it requires removing what is no longer needed.

Final Thought

James Robinson Motorcycle Training had a website built on technology that was more than a decade old.

It had become difficult to update, slow to respond and disconnected from the information prospective riders needed.

Rather than adding another layer of plugins and workarounds, we rebuilt the experience around the business's actual requirements.

The result is a fast, secure and accessible website with clear course information, transparent pricing, straightforward booking and a stronger foundation for traditional and AI-assisted search.

Four perfect Lighthouse scores. A 0.34-second measured server response. Zero homepage scripts.

But the most important improvement is simpler than any of those numbers.

Riders can now find the right course, understand what it costs and book without unnecessary friction.

At The DM Lab, we believe good website development is about selecting the right architecture for the problem - not simply adding more technology.
