As a graphic designer, I always try to better myself on each project. It’s not only creating something that’s right for the client, but it’s an opportunity to try out new techniques, build upon ideas previously developed. It’s also about the portfolio. Why would we put something in our portfolio we weren’t happy with? Although whatever we do it is always to the best of our abilities, sometimes it may fall short as to how we think it should be and what the client wants. We have had many happy customers before now who are pleased with our work, but my 3 wins on www.99designs.co.uk are achievements I am particularly proud of, as well as being shortlisted 5 times!
If you don’t already know, 99Designs allows freelance artists to pick and choose what they want to submit a design for and hope it makes the qualifying round and the finals following contest holder’s feedback.
It’s by no means a dead cert, but you have to be in it to win it. As much as I’d like to spend the day creating designs for contest after contest, I have to be selective, whether it’s the brief or the theme. It’s easier to design something for something you like, but surprisingly, my 3 contest wins have been for a construction company, an American band and a café! It’s a good feeling to win these contests knowing there were 20+ other designers entering each with at least 1 design. It’s also a good indicator of how others rate my ability to design. I know it’s not the be all and end all but it gives me confidence knowing that my work is up to a good standard.
